The upcoming celebrations of Rendcomb College's Centenary have had to be postponed due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Find out about the events that are planned at Rendcomb College, to celebrate our 100th birthday! The dates for these events will be rescheduled at later dates in 2020-21.
We are looking forward to welcoming the first students back to school on Tuesday, 2 June. In making the decision to re-open we have undertaken the following steps:
The best education for children and young people is one that adheres to the national curriculum, while still offering opportunities for exploration, free-thinking, and cultivating genuine interest. How does our boarding school support this for Junior students?
Rendcomb College is fortunate to have both a high-quality infrastructure and well-developed timetable, which enable us to meet academic targets while building (not stifling) the natural curiosity of our vibrant student community.
Junior pupils receive quality teaching at boarding school, to cover all the core subject areas. Our Seniors progress to focusing on their chosen fields of study. However, our aim is to ensure they carry with them insights into a wider range of topics, as well as excellent GCSE results.
In other words, helping our Juniors to find their best and preferred subjects for further study is very different from ‘turning them off’ some curriculum areas!
It’s also important to note that not all state schools can provide the depth of educational experience available at a successful independent school like Rendcomb College. For instance, Drama is sometimes only taught to older pupils, while we feel it develops important life skills in our Juniors too.
Here are five typical subjects taught to Juniors at boarding school.
1 - Design Technology
Teaching DT in schools can provide important creative stimulus and practical insights. All students benefit, irrespective of whether they go on the focus on essay-based topics as Seniors.
It enables them to explore the world around them in a highly tactile and logical way, including researching different structures, mechanisms, materials and methods of electrical control.
Taught well, Design Technology is also fun, especially any lessons involving food! This means students have their minds and creativity opened up, in a way that improves their whole learning experience at boarding school.
2 – Drama
Why is drama important in schools?
It is certainly not about nurturing future stars of stage and screen. We develop in our students an appreciation and understanding of the arts. This enriches their enjoyment of live theatre for example. Drama at a top boarding school will also develop presentation and critical analysis skills. The benefits include greater confidence in public speaking and an ability to understand and use body language.
Clearly, these and other creative learning experiences are all part of moulding resilient adults as well as stimulating a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
3 – Science
There is now a substantial drive to stimulate more Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics graduates globally. We hope that our superbly equipped, purpose-designed science labs are the starting point of a stellar career in this field.
However, we fully recognise that STEM subjects are not for everyone!
The aim is to open up science to all Junior pupils at Rendcomb College. Not simply to gain an understanding of core physics, chemistry and biology principles. We want them to have important safety insights while developing confidence and curiosity to explore and question their world.
4 – Computing
With the rampant rise of technology, any future career – or indeed Senior studies at boarding school – will rely on computer dexterity.
Many students at our independent school already have a fascination with technology of course. Within the framework of national teaching standards, we aim to channel this interest into maximising confidence in computer science. Pupils can develop important IT skills at boarding school that will have lifelong value.
5 - Physical Activity
If PE at school suggests to you shivering in shorts and T-shirts as you reluctantly run around a draughty playing field, think again.
Rendcomb College offers a superbly equipped gym and sports hall, and well-shielded sports fields in our extensive grounds. We also provide an enviable standard of coaching and highly diverse timetabled and leisure pursuits.
Of course, traditional sports are available. Though Junior boarders and day pupils can also take part in games lessons and extracurricular activities such as badminton, basketball, gymnastics, dance and swimming.
There are ample opportunities for team sports and competitive endeavours to secure positive affirmation, at all levels of ability and fitness. Rendcomb College also encourages Juniors to enjoy personal challenges and to benefit from improving their individual physical skills.
After all, good physical health is an excellent source of support for good mental health.
Breaking open pigeon holes
The way boarding schools teach curriculum topics to Juniors is just as important as the breadth of subject matter we provide.
Smaller class sizes and focused learning support are woven into our classrooms, as well as study groups and additional tuition outside the classroom. Also, by recognising and encouraging individualism in our students, we give them the tools to self-manage the way they acquire knowledge for the rest of their lives.

Modern parenthood has been likened to spinning precious plates, while balancing on a ball, above a 30ft drop!
Not least as there's no such thing as a ‘normal’ work pattern and life has a habit of taking twists and turns. It all means that your obligations and priorities can change week by week. One of the reasons Rendcomb College offers various boarding options at our leading UK independent school.
However, the most important motive for offering different boarding arrangements is to meet the diverse needs of the children. Some relish the prospect of a full-time place at Rendcomb College, to optimise on all the out of classroom stimulation, support and fun. While others prefer to stay overnight just part of the week, or when their activities keep them here well into the evening.
As we are an independent school that pivots in treating each student as an individual, it’s vital to reflect that in the variety of options for overnight arrangements at boarding school.
Of course, students don’t have to stay ANY nights at this outstanding independent school! We have a lively and happy group of ‘day boarders’ at Rendcomb College who live close enough to sleep at home.
Day boarders can stay under our care until 6 pm, at no additional charge. Or, later into the evening for a small additional fee. This is something many parents find extremely convenient. Though largely it is to enable our pupils to engage in the many out of classroom activities at boarding schools.
However, day boarders may occasionally want to stay over and we have systems in place to make that possible too
The other end of the spectrum is boarders who stay all through term times, only joining their families in school holidays. This works brilliantly for when parents are working overseas or have complex career commitments. Or, if the student wants to get lots of additional support to excel in their studies, for example.
The different options that lie between day boarding and being with us all through term times are entirely your choice. For instance, some full-time boarders return home every weekend, while other students take advantage of Flexible or Occasional Boarding arrangements.
Flexible v Occasional boarding school stays
For some parents and students, it is possible to establish a clear pattern of when staying at boarding school works best to keep everyone happy. This could be one or two nights every week of term time, or every alternate week for example. The pattern does not even have to be consecutive nights.
Rendcomb College welcomes a planned pattern of overnight stays. Students benefitting from this Flexible accommodation option will usually have the same room every time.
We also welcome Occasional boarders with no fixed pattern. If we have accommodation available, this can even be organised the same day. This could be due to parents going away, or the student wanting to sleep at school when they have an evening activity for example.
Sometimes, they just want spontaneous ‘sleepovers’ with their friends and to stay in our year-specific Houses for extra fun time! All under the care of our professional Houseparents of course.
It’s not always possible to give occasional boarders the same bedroom every time of course, and sometimes if we are absolutely full, we have to remove this option. However, most of the time this is an ideal way to support the changing needs of the student community at boarding school.
The costs of top boarding schools
The fees charged for boarding at our Cotswolds independent school would be clearly outlined, depending on which accommodation option best suits your child and their age.
Occasional boarding for day pupils - or as an addition to a Flexible Boarding arrangement - is subject to a sliding scale, and includes meals and all the nurturing supervision we provide. It is £37.50 per night for pupils in Year 7 to 9 and £48 per night for pupils in Year 10 to 13.
Should you need to take advantage of this option for irregular and spontaneous accommodation at boarding school more than eight times a term, the cost rises to £52 (all year groups).

What’s best for your child?

Rendcomb College was thrilled to hear from Dave Hughes, an Old Rendcombian (1991-98), who has recently founded ‘Cotswold Scrubs’. It is a project which he set up to provide scrubs to frontline NHS workers and care home workers which have been made by locals who have volunteered to sew them in the Cotswolds.
Rendcomb College is delighted to announce the launch of bridging programmes for Y11 and Y13. From 11th May, our students will move onto these programmes which are clearly structured but also provide flexibility and choice, allowing students to develop their independence and decision making. As you would expect from Rendcomb, the programmes are holistic and in line with our aims to develop thoughtful, adventurous and academically ambitious students.
