Geography Field Trips to Snowdonia and the Dorset Coast

Sixth Form Geography Field Trip to North Wales

Geography

At Rendcomb College, Geography is taught throughout the school from the Year 7 to university entrance level.  In the department we use a holistic approach to teach Geography, each course being concerned and linked to various aspects of the physical and human environment. ‘Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds, using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem-solving skills both inside and outside the classroom. As such, it prepares pupils for adult life and employment. Geography is a focus within the curriculum for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development. It is also an important link between the natural and social sciences. As pupils study Geography, they encounter different societies and cultures. This helps them realise how nations rely on each other. It can inspire them to think about their own place in the world, their values, and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.’ (National Curriculum Online).

At Rendcomb we place an emphasis on supporting the understanding of geographical concepts and theories by teaching a wide range of up-to-date examples, both in the classroom and through local, national and international fieldwork. This helps to explain contemporary global issues such as famine, flooding, climate change and inner city problems.

The department aims to maintain high academic standards while at the same time ensuring that pupils acquire a good grounding in the basic disciplines of the subject, ensuring that all pupils can reach their full potential in geography.

At Rendcomb, Geography is a strong and popular subject and despite choices having to be made at GCSE and A level, student numbers compare favourably with other major departments within the College.
