Physical Education
In years 1 – 3 every pupil receives one lesson of Physical Education per week in addition to their games periods. They are introduced to a range of activities, including gymnastics, basketball, health and fitness, badminton and athletics, with a structured programme to ensure progression over the three years. Full use is made of the sports facilities at Rendcomb, including the sports hall, weights room, squash courts and grounds.
Pupils in year 4 can choose to study AQA Physical Education as one of their GCSE options. Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability in two of the following three areas; performing, coaching or officiating. This means that a pupil who is interested in sport does not necessarily need to be able to play a sport to a high standard in order to gain a good grade. In addition, candidates are examined, through a written paper on their knowledge and understanding of physiology, health and fitness, training methods and contemporary issues in sport.
Students can continue the study of the subject at AS and A2. The AQA examination board course, Sport and Physical Education, is taught by two specialist teachers over two years and broadly follows the same structure as the GCSE course.
Successful candidates have gone on to study Sports Science, Sports Coaching, Sports Physiotherapy at University. Other possible careers include journalism, officiating and of course performing.
