Cultural Enrichment - Alastair Eyken

On Thursday 1st October, Alastair Eykyn, professional Radio 5-Live journalist, visited Rendcomb College to give a talk about his career and the profession of sports journalism to the 4th 5th and 6th Forms in a packed Dulverton Hall. It was very well received by all, especially the anecdotes of professional sportsmen, such as Brian O’Driscoll, Duncan Fletcher and Steve Borthwick. Alastair’s enthusiasm for his job also made a big impression. That enthusiasm was rivalled by James Brittain, who asked questions at nearly every opportunity, and Charlotte Jones, whose exclamation that ‘Mike Phillips lives down my road,’ will have woken up the whole of Gloucestershire.

In a comprehensive and detailed talk, Alastair outlined his career, the dos and don’ts of journalism and commentary, as well as getting the audience involved in mock commentary situations. It was a very informative evening and he received a lengthy applause. Thanks must go to Mr Jennings for organising the evening.
