The project was the brainchild of 30 pupils aged between nine and 11 years, who wanted to focus on ‘mini-beasts’ for their assignment. They researched a number of different types of outdoor bugs before embarking on making a set of 3D models for use in a woodland display that measured two by four metres when complete.

The school has been presented with a certificate and a £500 cheque in recognition of winning the ‘Totally Creative’ regional award. The judges were particularly impressed by the very high standard of Rendcomb College Junior School’s entry and the huge amounts of thought, energy and effort that had evidently gone into the project.
Lynne Watson, teacher at Rendcomb College Junior School said: “The children are over the moon to have won the ‘Totally Creative’ award. They worked very hard on the project which not only demonstrates their environmental awareness but also shows great creativity. I am very proud of them.”
TOTAL representative, Sam Hammond, commented: “TOTAL is pleased to be supporting this competition and encouraging young people to take a greater interest in the future of their planet.

She continued: “It is great to see the enthusiasm demonstrated by the quality of Rendcomb’s School project. The pupils have been really creative with their environmental project. Not only have they learnt about animals and eco-issues, they have also brought the message to other children through their display.”
YPTE Director, Peter Littlewood, said: “After three years of the awards, it is still so inspirational to see some of the fantastic ideas young people around the country have come up with. By taking part, the children have learned how to take care of the environment, and that is vital for everyone’s future. I look forward to seeing even more brilliant ideas next year.”
TV presenter and supporter of the TOTAL Green School awards, Dermot O’Leary added: “As a President of the Young People’s Trust for the Environment, it’s really exciting for me to see the TOTAL Green School Awards grow so spectacularly. The way that young people are looking at creative solutions to the world’s environmental problems is fantastic. We can all learn a great deal from them. Our young people are the future of the planet, so it’s brilliant to see how much they care. It should give us all hope.”
The Total Green School Awards competition will run again in 2009/2010. For details on how to enter go to http://www.totalgreenschoolawards.org
