Eco-Schools

The Government in England wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. In 2006 the government set out a Sustainable Schools Framework to encourage learning.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.
It is run by Foundation for Environmental Education – 40 countries involved. It is administered in England by ENCAMS.
There are Bronze & Silver awards together with the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activities.
This has taken 2 years to achieve with our external assessor visiting on the last week of last term. She said we were the first private school she had assessed. All of the staff and pupils have been involved at the Junior School.
• Introduction of the Eco Team with children from Years 3-6 attending meetings.
• Use of the Woodland classroom & outside area for many areas of the curriculum.
• Introduced an eco-code to save energy & water and these ideas have been put into practice.
• We have encouraged healthy eating at morning break and lunchtime.
• Gardening club have grown vegetables & these have been eaten at lunchtime.
• The younger children have enjoyed Forest School- an outside learning programme led by Katie Hockey and Ruth Flint who are both qualified Forest School leaders.
