Spanish
Spanish is a relative newcomer to the curriculum at Rendcomb. Study of the language was introduced around 4 years ago, and last summer the first group of students sat Spanish GCSE. There is evidence of growing interest in the subject as we have students wishing to continue their studies beyond GCSE.
Whereas French and German are offered in Year 1, Spanish is currently an option in Year 3. It is a popular choice with parents who encourage their offspring to learn a language that is spoken so widely. Equally, students who view Spain and Spanish-speaking countries as attractive holiday destinations, see the immediate relevance of picking up some Spanish.
At present the two 3rd Form groups who study Spanish are not “setted”. Students need to give up either French or German in order to take Spanish. The course is intended to suit both youngsters who are interested in learning some basic conversational Spanish and those who are considering following the 2-year GCSE course.
To cater for all abilities, we keep grammar to a minimum in Year 3, and students make rapid progress. After only one term, most are able to speak and write about themselves.
We are a happy and thriving department!
