German
Germany is geographically and economically at the
heart of Europe; there are around 100 million native
speakers of German, which makes it the second-most
frequently spoken native language in Europe. The language
still has a very strong reputation with universities and employers.
With modern communicative teaching methods it is possible
to achieve good communication skills in a relatively short time
and we aim to make our lessons fun and lively. We have
excellent ICT facilities in the department and new interactive
software to accompany our course. At Rendcomb the German
course and examinations follow the same format as French and Spanish.
Rendcomb has ongoing close and friendly links with a
boarding school in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in North Germany.
We have been taking 1st and 2nd form trips to Germany since
1995 and have run two very successful exchanges for the
3rd and 4th form. This year we are also arranging a second
trip to Berlin for our 5th form Germanists and Historians.
We remain committed to providing a comprehensive range
of European languages at Rendcomb, and we are pleased at
the continuing profile of German in the department.
