Chemistry
1st and 2nd Form
Chemistry forms an important part of the Science course followed by the pupils. Starting with learning how to light a Bunsen burner they have many opportunities to carry out experiments and to learn how to handle chemicals safely.
3rd Form
Chemistry is taught as a separate science by a subject specialist. The emphasis is on learning through experimental work. It is hoped that pupils will develop observational skills and the ability to analyse data effectively.
GCSE
At the beginning of the 4th Year the choice is made to study Chemistry as part of triple award GCSE or double award GCSE (both AQA). Typically about one-third of pupils study triple award. We aim to increase pupils understanding of how chemistry relates to every day life and the benefits and drawbacks associated with certain processes and chemicals.
A Level
A “BB” grade or above in double award science is a suitable qualification to begin AS Chemistry + a realisation that hard work is needed throughout each academic year!
A and AS level teaching is shared between two members of staff, both of whom are chartered chemists. We follow the OCR specification A where a key part of the course is the acquiring of practical skills. Some examinations are taken in January giving opportunities for the retaking of certain papers should this be desirable.
If a student is interested and is studying Mathematics at A level then there is the opportunity to take a further examination, the Chemistry Advanced Extension award or enter the national Chemistry Olympiad competition.
